Barton Creek: Crenshaw Cliffside -private or resort guest
8212 Barton Creek Drive Austin, TX 78735
(512) 329-4000
The natural beauty of the Texas Hill Country is the focus of course architects, Ben Crenshaw and partner, Bill Coore. Rolling hills, natural plateaus, soft contours and native vegetation are harmoniously woven into a playable championship layout that provides a variety of interesting holes to delight members and visitors alike. Austin's well-known native son and Barton Creek Resort & Spa's touring professional, Ben Crenshaw, admits his is an "old-style" philosophy. "We believe the best architect is nature and the best players' courses make good use of the natural terrain. We let the land dictate the routing rather than imposing ourselves on the landscape." Indeed, Crenshaw's course plays across the land quite naturally and most magically, and was rated 38th among the "50 Best Courses in Texas" by The Dallas Morning News. As an ardent student of golf's history, Crenshaw offers a rare taste of a traditional layout in his design. The course features broad, rolling fairways, widely-varied green sizes and is a fitting tribute to the way the game was once played. The large, undulating putting surfaces give golfers their biggest challenge. While the average golfer will attempt to use the natural slopes to aid an approach shot, the low handicap player faces the challenge of positioning the ball at the most advantageous point for an approach putt. As part of the environmentally sensitive considerations, durable grasses were utilized. Bermuda 419 is used on the fairways and Tifdwarf Bermuda for the greens. These drought and heat tolerant native grasses lessen the need for man's intervention. The 18th hole is an exciting climax which plays slightly uphill. Approach shots must cross a running creek to land on a low-lying green, which is seemingly etched into the hillside. The Crenshaw Cliffside course is both forgiving for the novice and challenging for the seasoned golfer.

Bergstrom Golf Course - *CLOSED* - public
10330 Golf Course Road Del Valle, TX 78619
(512) 530-4653
Location Location. No two words better describe Bergstrom Golf Course in Austin. That's because it's located just south of the new Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) and provides any businessman traveling to Austin with the perfect opportunity to sneak away from the business at hand a little early and hit the links before jetting out of town. While location is a main reason for playing the course, it's creative yet simple links-style layout of 6,576 yards, also provides ample opportunity to get in a three-and-a-half hour round during the weekdays and catch the next flight out. Although many, including the locals, don't know that Bergstrom is a course with a long history. On the grounds of the former Bergstrom Air Force Base, which fell victim to military cutbacks and was shut down in 1992, Bergstrom Golf Course has been around since 1952. It was always open to the general public, but members of the military were the main clientele. From 1992 until September 2000, a private corporation owned and operated the course. Today, the City of Austin owns the property and is in the process of making renovations, most of which have occurred in the clubhouse.

Connell said it is not clear as to the exact date, but he said he believed the course was reduced to nine holes some time after the war ended. Richard Anderson, vice president of physical affairs at Southwestern, said the recent history is a little clearer. "In 1983-84, the course, which had been private for its entire existence, was opened to the general public." Since that time, the course has averaged almost 10,000 rounds per year. Anderson said the course is named after two people important to the university. "E.L. Kurth and Nely G. Landrum are two prominent and well-respected alumni of the school." Kurth-Landrum remained nine holes until late 1999 according to Connell. It was at that time, he said, that the school opted to remove three holes to make room for the new soccer and softball fields.

Pedernales Country Club also known as Willie Nelson’s Cut-N-Putt - public
807 Paisley Spicewood, TX 78669

Pedernales Country Club is a little rugged. The fairways are hard and give you plenty of roll. Unfortunately, that roll might wind up in the woods or in a bed of rocks, which are littered throughout the course. To overcome this rough terrain, "The Pedernales Stroll" rule was enacted and basically states – "in case your ball ends up in an unplayable or merely unpleasant lie, local rules permit you to pick it up and stroll to a more agreeable location for a free drop." Where’s the controversy in that?
